West Social Center is located off of LaCanada Blvd. and is the second oldest center in GVR. Do not let the age of the building fool you. It has not only been well kept, but upgraded over the years. The West Social Center houses the Wood Working Shop. As an example of keeping up with the times, the Wood Working Shop is currently being updated and enlarged to twice its original size. Expected to be finished in January of 2009, it will be the most modern shop in the nation. Anyone can join. Anyone can build or become a craftsman. They offer classes for everything from wooden bowl making to cabinetry. The cost for all of this is a whopping $35.00 a year. YES I DID SAY A YEAR. For more information of the Woodworkers of Green Valley go to http://www.gvwoodworkers.org/. West Center also houses a lapidary or jewelry making club. Most folks that make jewelry never dreamed they would do such a thing. They are people that did not know they had talent until they moved to Green Valley. The lapidary studio also offers many classes all taught by your neighbors. Wow what a fun place to live. West Center also has a room to relax and play a little pool, a shop to sell the wares that residents have made, a huge auditorium with a stage and complete kitchen facilities. It is used for plays, movies, get-togethers and all sorts of entertainment, including professionals. Remember when you move to Green Valley, you do not get just one of these centers, you get all thirteen of them. No Where, yes I repeat No Where in the nation can this be duplicated.

• Green Valley Recreation, better known as GVR is a non-profit organization serving the leisure and social needs of our active baby boomer community.
• GVR owns and operates twelve Recreation Centers (soon to be thirteen), with a total property value of more than $18 million. GVR provides many services and activities to a private membership base of nearly 13,000 households (an estimated 26,500 individuals).
• GVR is made up of volunteers and a handful of employees. Hundreds of volunteers assist a dedicated staff to help operate year-round programs for both active and passive “boomer lifestyles”.
• Most of our communities have an exemption to the fair housing law as to age and familial status. Anyone, any age, can own a home in Green Valley, however, in the majority of our communities at least one resident must be 55 or over and no permanent resident can be under the age of 18. Your family is always welcome to visit and use our facilities.
• The cost for all this is rather minimal when you look at the big picture. There is a New Member Capital Fee of $2,132.00 paid at the close of escrow of your home; you will only pay that fee once. After that there is an annual fee of $394.00 and is tied to Social Security. It cannot increase more than the increase of Social Security benefits. Some of the clubs charge a small yearly fee, for instance, the wood shop has a yearly fee of $35.00 as does the computer club and camera club.
